I smiled when I visited iMadeItSo’s blog a few weeks ago. Her opening photograph is of her cookbook, the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. I have a Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. It doesn’t look like iMadeItSo’s book though. It belonged to my mother before me, and it hasn’t been new in quite a long time.
I used to bake cookies and muffins and such fare regularly when my children were young. Once they reached their teen years, they would bake too. These days, though, now that there’s just RailGuy and myself here, I rarely bake. It’s not that I’ve lost interest so much as that we just don’t need the extra calories of cakes and cookies. I have a bit of a sweet tooth, and if there are freshly baked cookies in the house, I can’t settle for just one!
When I saw iMadeItSo’s recipe for Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake, so beautifully illustrated, I felt inspired to give it a whirl. It turned out quite well, although the loaf didn’t rise quite as much as it should. Tasty, though! We had some last night, with strawberries and ice cream. Mmmmmm! Thank you, iMadeItSo, for the inspiration.

I wonder just how many of those cookbooks are out there? I have one, also my Mother’s. She used it constantly. Me, eh, not so much. I didn’t follow my Mother’s example there, and am not much of a cook.
this is wonderful, thank you! your book has certainly gotten a lot more use than mine. and sorry about those extra calories!
Wow — everything looks so delicious — ice cream, strawberries, and lemon poppy cake! Gone are the days when I can eat such goodies but I still drool when I see such tasty treats such as yours. — barbara
Louise, sounds like it was a popular cook book. Mine didn’t get major use either, but it is the first edition, 3rd printing, 1953. When you’ve been hanging around that long, you’re bound to look a bit beat up.
iMadeItSo, thanks to you for the recipe, and also your follow up post!
Thanks, Barbara. It was a nice treat. We don’t indulge too often these days.
