Our daughter, Fiddlegirl, stopped in the town of Grand Falls, New Brunswick while she was on holiday in the region a couple of years ago. August, it was, in 2008. She was charmed by the town and the scenery and reported that it was one of her favorite stops on her trip. She took the photograph, above, of the beautiful falls for which the town is named.
Thus, when RailGuy and I were out east at the end of June, we made a stop in Grand Falls too. But it seems the falls vary according to the time of the year and the flow of the river. Below is a photograph of the falls as we found them!

Okay – there’s gotta be a follow up to this coming. Why the difference? Drought? Damming? Hydroelectricity? Thirsty fish upstream?
I really don’t know, Ellen! The river has been dammed for hydroelectricity for some time. I have to assume it has been dry, although there had been lots of rain when we were there! We stopped at the tourist information booth but all the young ladies there had to offer was that the river level varied.
I’ve had the same experience as you — whenever I’ve stopped in Grand Falls, they have been not very grand at all… I guess I should visit in the spring. Still, the rocky gorge is pretty impressive, even without the falls.
The one time I saw Grand Falls — with Eyegillian, of course — it must have been a During, ’cause the flow was somewhere between your Before and After photos.
Well, I guess when you visit Grand Falls, timing is everything! As you note, eyegillian, the gorge is impressive. Apparently their is a zip line attraction in the works.
