This I have done to let you see
What care my parents took of me
When I am dead and in my grave
This piece of work my friends will have.
Hannah Hall worked this in the 19th year of her age
1826

What a great piece of material culture! Very detailed with cultural icons. Would love to know the story behind the piece. — barbara
There was no information available at the museum, Barbara. I loved that the cross-stitch was meant to show that her parents had raised her right 🙂
“In 1828, after her tyrannical father was carried off by apoplexy, Hannah carefully unpicked his face, detatched his arms from his body, and removed part of the rooftop, symbolizing the heavenly thunderbolt that had struck him down.”

Oh, Turtle! Perfect.
