The paperwhites that were just green shoots on January 25th, are now in full bloom. It’s amazing how quickly they grow.
Paperwhite bulbs are quite readily available just before Christmas. I heard a radio host commenting on how much she loves paperwhites, can’t wait for the bulbs to appear on store shelves each winter. She especially loves their scent. I was a bit surprised by this latter confession, as the scent of paperwhites isn’t quite so appealing as, say, roses or lilacs. Perhaps it is an acquired taste that derives from the association of the scent with the delicious taste of spring that the flowers represent.
I left my pot of paperwhites on the windowsill so that I might enjoy the sunlit blooms against the blue shades of a snowy background. I planted last year’s paperwhites in my garden, so it is nice to anticipate a second crop of paperwhites waiting under the snow, resting quietly, waiting for their turn to shine.
