The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis. McClelland & Stewart Ltd. 2007.

Yesterday, The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis won the 2011 Canada Reads award. I was very pleased with this outcome, and would have voted for Plans too. It is a timely novel. We are very fortunate to be able to take our democracy for granted, and not have to rally in the streets like the Egyptians who appear nightly on the news right now. But it is a mistake to take democracy for granted, to look the other way and not participate, to turn a blind eye to gross injustices that are allowed to eat away at our system. Democracy only works as long as citizens participate and expect and accept nothing but the best from politicians. You can read my review of The Best Laid Plans at Willow Books.

I was a bit surprised and disappointed that Essex County was the first book voted out. I was very impressed by this graphic novel and would have chosen it as runner-up. Its haunting images and moving stories stick with you. You can read more about Essex County here.
