This cartoon was created to celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd. It marks the date of the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. 2013 is the UN International Year for Water Cooperation.
If you think oil is the most valuable liquid on earth, try living a few days without water. Here in Canada we are fortunate to be able to take clean water for granted. It won’t stay that way if we don’t look after this invaluable, life-sustaining, better-than-gold resource.
Clockwise from drum kit: American Toad, American Bullfrog, Green Frog, Spring Peeper.
Someone had a section of Peeper territory torn out this past summer, ostensibly for a small strip mall. Sump pumps are a hot item in this town. 😦
I do so entirely agree – we need wetlands, and we need to preserve the ones we have! I would have everyone just brushing their teeth using bottle water for a week to see how it is…
I am pretty discouraged these days about the lack of concern in Canada for the environment. It just all seems to be about the almighty dollar, and people are so incredibly short-sighted. 😦
I entirely agree. I have been amazed at the rich wild life (insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals) here compared to other places where we have lived, and I am sure most of it is due to the fact that we are surrounded by wetlands.
Dandy, I’m sure you’ve nailed the IDs!
Diversifolius, we surely do underappreciate our water.
Natalie, it sure has been depressing here in Canada. You would think Conservatives would be more interested in conserving…
Alain, You must have some interesting life around you there.
