April 5th marked the 25th birthday of our arabian mare, Wiregrass Czarina. Czarina celebrated with a quiet day spent in the company of her best friends, Louis and Teddy. Everyone is glad to finally be able to enjoy some warm, sunny days. Shaggy winter coats are being shed in handfuls.

This morning was an amazingly beautiful day. After I had put breakfast out for the horses and Louis, I stood and soaked up the sun and watched everyone eating for a bit. When I moved towards the little group, Mousie began to move away down the field, clearly indicating she was up for a game of tag.

Playing tag is one of Mousie’s favorite things to do, next to eating apples. When I play tag with Mousie, I’m always “It”, while Mousie gallops about the field, round and round, her tail held high, blowing big, mock snorts of terror. My role is to stand in the centre, making an occasional feint in her direction. Mostly, though, she is happy to pretend I am hot on her heels and I am free to just watch her lovely self as she gallops and trots and struts.

She dashes around the others. They pay no attention to her. No way are they wasting time galloping about. They resolutely continue eating their breakfast. Mousie tries to entice them through the gate to the adjoining field so she can gallop up the next field, but they’re having none of it.

Mousie comes back resignedly. What spoilsports they are, what lazybones! They’re no fun!

She gallops up and down a few more times, and finally decides to join the other two.
