Pencil and Paint

Winter has a pencil
For pictures clear and neat,
She traces the black tree-tops
Upon a snowy sheet.

But autumn has a palette
And a painting-brush instead,
And daubs the leaves for pleasure
With yellow, brown, and red.

Open drawer, empty shoe,
Anybody’s lap will do.
Fitted in a cardboard box,
In the cupboard with your frocks.
