Let It Snow

Following closely on the heels of the first dusting of snow and the first ice of the season, the first snow storm has arrived. The wind began to rage in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and by 8 o’clock, several inches of snow were on the ground. It was the beginning of a full day of snowfall.

Soon the green world we enjoyed through November had disappeared. There is something very peaceful about a day of snow. At least, there is if you don’t have urgent appointments you have to get to. Driving in snow is a white-knuckle experience. But if you can stay home and watch the storm from the comfort of your living room, it’s rather pleasant.

No one looks forward to a snow storm as much as rural students, who can enjoy a day at home when the buses are cancelled. I used to look forward to snow days when my kids were young too, a nice surprise change of routine.

Of course, there is a bit of work to be done. I shovel the paths around the house and out to the barn with my blue snow shovel, a Christmas gift last year. It has been very handy.

About 4:30 in the afternoon, as it was beginning to grow dark, I went out and measured the snow. It was 19 centimetres, almost 8 inches deep. The snow was still falling but only lightly by the time darkness fell. Winter has arrived.
